Reducing the likelihood of a pedestrian accident

Whether you like to go jogging for exercise or you walk to work every day, you need to take steps to stay safe on the road. There are a number of ways in which pedestrians can reduce the odds of an accident and it is important to understand how prevalent pedestrian accidents are.

Sadly, you could find yourself seriously hurt in a pedestrian accident, regardless of the precautionary measures you take. Many reckless drivers do not pay attention to other vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians.

Clothing can prevent pedestrian accidents

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the clothes you wear could help reduce your chances of becoming involved in a pedestrian accident. For example, if you wear reflective clothing while walking at night, drivers are more likely to see you. Moreover, wearing bright clothing during the day can also help drivers notice you (and avoid hitting you).

Additionally, you should always remain alert and look out for other vehicles. It is dangerous to walk near traffic after drinking alcohol and you should refrain from using electronic devices or earbuds while walking since this can distract you.

Pedestrian accidents, sidewalks and crosswalks

The CDC also reports that it is vital to cross the road at intersections and designated crosswalks if you can. If a sidewalk is available, stay on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, the CDC recommends walking on the shoulder while facing traffic. Many pedestrians are seriously hurt while trying to cross the road and some lose their lives. These accidents will continue to occur for many reasons and negligent drivers must answer for the hardships they cause.
