10 deadly mistakes drivers keep making

On Behalf of | Jun 11, 2019 | Car Accidents |

Most car accidents happen because someone makes a mistake. Human error keeps these statistics so high, year after year.

Mistakes, of course, vary from one accident to the next. But the common denominator is that the accident could have been avoided if no one had made a mistake at all. That accident was not a random event that took everyone by surprise. Someone caused it. They may not have done it intentionally, but they still caused it.

To really understand just how dangerous the road can be, here are 10 mistakes people keep on making:

  1. Texting while they drive: Certainly, texting isn’t the only issue. Drivers also stream music, make calls, check social media and more.
  2. Drinking and driving: Don’t assume you are not impaired just because you are not over the 0.08% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit.
  3. Driving emotionally: In particular, angry drivers may find themselves engaging in road rage, which is a type of aggressive driving that can lead to accidents.
  4. Breaking the speed limit: Some people are constantly in a rush. Unfortunately, people lose their lives because other people think they might be late to work.
  5. Not giving children proper car seats: Kids must have the right car seat. They must get strapped in properly. Parents must double-check the seat before every trip.
  6. Ignoring the weather conditions: For instance, people often drive just as fast in heavy fog and rain as they would on a clear summer day, despite the elevated risk.
  7. Not wearing glasses: Even those who do wear glasses or contacts may end up putting others at risk if they have an expired prescription.
  8. Overreacting: If a driver starts to lose control or drifts out of their lane, for instance, they often overreact or oversteer when trying to correct the car’s course, and they just make things worse.
  9. Driving when they’re too tired: Some believe that drowsy driving can impact someone much in the same way that drunk driving does, but people still drive when they’re exhausted all the time.
  10. Tailgating: People often do not realize that they need to leave a bigger gap to have a safe stopping distance. Others also tailgate on purpose, perhaps due to the aggressive driving noted above.

These are just 10 of many potential mistakes that people can make around you on the road. Every time you get in the car, you run the risk of getting injured in an accident with one of these drivers.

If that does happen, make sure you know how to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, loss of earning capacity, mental anguish, loss of consortium and much more.
