Defensive Driving Basics

On Behalf of | Feb 27, 2017 | Car Accidents |

You can’t control traffic. What you can do is drive in such a manner that the chances of your suffering from a car accident are minimized. Defensive driving is the best way to ensure your part in any road mishaps are reduced. The first thing you need to do is always be aware of your surroundings. Scan the horizon to check from any potential problems early on so you can stop in time. Keep an eye on your blind spots while changing lanes. Don’t depend entirely on your rearview mirror to show you the true picture, but take a moment to glance back before turning.

You should never drive in an impaired condition. The act of driving needs full attention, fast driving and precise movements. All those things are hard to do in a drunk or drugged state. You should also avoid driving if you are feeling tired or sleepy. Don’t allow any distractions on the road to take your mind away from the task of navigating your vehicle safely through traffic.

Do your best to avoid bad drivers who can cause problems on the road. If you see a vehicle moving in a haphazard manner, give it a wide berth. Simply being in the vehicle’s proximity can leave you open to second-hand effects of an accident. Above all, keep a cool head. Road rage never results in anything good.

How you behave towards others on the road will determine how they behave towards you. Always try to be calm and polite. Keep an adequate distance between your car and the one in front of you. Wear a seat belt at all times, slow down if you’re experiencing poor weather, and remember speeding is never a good idea.
