Imagine spending the weekend in New Orleans and taking in all the Mardi Gras festivities. There are parties and parades throughout the city attended by people from all over the U.S. As you stand on the sidewalk, watching a parade, a car suddenly careens into the crowd. This is exactly what happened on February 25 in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans.

As thousands of people watched the parade, a 25-year old man plowed into the innocent bystanders. According to police, the driver’s blood alcohol level (BAC) was 0.232 roughly two hours after he drove his truck through the parade route. This is almost three times the legal limit of .08. The police have reported that the drunk driver injured 28 people. Of those, 21 went to the hospital, where three people remain with moderate to serious injuries. The victims ranged in age from one year to 50 years old. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

Anyone can be a victim of a drunk driver

Even though it is highly dangerous and illegal, people still choose to drink and drive. When people do this, it puts everyone at risk. As proven by the drunk driver in New Orleans, it is not just other drivers that are at risk when someone is driving while intoxicated. You can become a victim while simply standing on the sidewalk.

If a drunk driver has injured you or someone you love, it is important to understand your rights and options. An experienced attorney in the New Orleans area can help you navigate the process of filing a claim.

Get the justice you deserve

The man that drove into the Mardi Gras revelers will certainly face a serious punishment handed down by a Louisiana court, but the people that went to the hospital do not deserve to shoulder expensive medical bills. When you have been involved in an accident caused by an intoxicated individual, you can attempt to seek damages from that person.

Do not become a victim twice over. If you or someone you love has suffered because of the negligent actions of a drunk driver, you deserve to receive compensation for your injuries. Get in touch with a local New Orleans attorney today to have your case reviewed. You should not be left trying to pay high medical bills because of someone else’s bad decision.
