Will a text messaging "driver mode" help prevent crashes?

Amid the outcry about distracted driving, there's one key thing that's not happening. Even with widespread awareness, texting while driving has been increasing. At any moment in the day, the National Occupant Protection Use Survey estimates that 660,000 drivers are using a cell phone or other electronic device from behind the wheel.

As Many as 6,600 Truckers' Licenses Threatened by Fake Physicals

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently indicted a chiropractor, who provided DOT physicals for commercial drivers, with fraud. The man was approved to provide the medical examiner certificates required for commercial driver's licenses, and federal prosecutors claim he handed them out to around 6,600 drivers -- without actually performing the tests.

An Interstate is never a safe place for pedestrians, but there are times when people do need to get out of their vehicles. Police and first responders, for example, get out of their vehicles in order to write tickets or help after crashes. When those officials do so, however, they take steps to ensure other motorists are aware. They can block lanes or even close roads, if necessary to protect themselves and the driver they're assisting.
